On 18th November 2014, I and many other Media students sat in on a talk with guest speaker Sean O’Brien as part of Employability and Enterprise week at Leeds Trinity University.
sean obrien

Sean graduated from Leeds Trinity in 2012 with a degree in ‘Television’ and is now currently working on Celebrity Big Brother as a task researcher.
He came back to Trinity for Employability and Enterprise week and spoke to us about his time at university, his new career at Big Brother and any tips he had for surviving the Television industry!

If he wanted us to remember anything, it was to:

GET AS MUCH EXPERIENCE AS YOU CAN

Experience is experience, whether it’s big or small. He couldn’t tell us enough that we have a great media centre here at Leeds Trinity and we should take full advantage of all the equipment and opportunities available.

During his three years at Trinity he worked in various TV production companies such as:

bbc entertainment north           freemantle media uk      Remedy-Productions            zodiak media                      Lucky-Day-Productions

From working at BBC Entertainment North to Luck Day Productions, Sean gained copious amounts of experience working as a runner for many shows such as Britains Got Talent and Cbeebies. He also completed many weeks of experience developing his skills as a task researcher, and found his love for creating new, exciting games and formats for numerous television programmes.

Sean couldn’t stress enough that in order to get where you want to go, whether it be in the TV industry or somewhere else, that putting yourself out there and gaining as much work experience as you can will really help you in the long term and ultimately make it easier for you to get your career off the ground.

To finish off he gave us some vital tips and tricks on surviving the Industry, and an insight into the best and worst things about working within Television.
These pieces of advice were to help prepare ourselves for the world of TV and would help make our first experiences of the industry that little bit easier.
